Riihivilla is a small family business with over 20 years of experience. Our mitten kits are designed by us, and they are based on traditional Finnish mittens with our own patterns. Yarn used in the kits is 100% Finnsheep wool in natural colors of the sheep and in colors hand-dyed with plants and mushrooms. We sell also undyed Finnsheep wool yarn, and occasionally  small amounts of yarn dyed with natural dyes. Most of our dyed yarn is sold at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki during summer months, and Saturdays during winter.  Some natural dyestuffs are available also in the online shop.

All colors to Riihivilla yarns come from natural sources: plants, mushrooms, barks and even insects, like cochineal. The dyestuff is first extracted from plants or mushrooms by soaking, simmering or boiling and then bound to the fiber which is pre-treated with a so-called mordant. Riihivilla uses only the safest mordants, alum, cream of tartar and iron, which ensure the proper fixation of the dyestuff to the fiber.

The dye process is slow, hours, days and sometimes even weeks or months. Fermenting plant material gives time for the natural enzymes in the plants or mushrooms to change or release natural dyestuffs, which then bind strongly to the mordanted fibers. Best results come with time, you can't hurry nature.

Beginning of October is still a busy time at the market, the second week of October there is Silakkamarkkinat, Herring Festival, and we'll be there then four days that week. I am now dyeing more for the market, but after the Herring Festival I hope to have also more dyed yarns to the online shop. Around October 20th I will add some new dyed yarns to the shop. Mushroom season is good this year (plenty of rain in September), and so there will be more yarns also dyed with mushrooms.

If you are visiting Helsinki, please come and see if we are at the market KAUPPATORI. During summer our booth is open about four days a week and the exact market days you can find in the right hand column in my blog.  During the winter season from October until May our booth is open mostly only Saturdays, depending on weather, but sometimes also Fridays. You are also always welcome to email me to inquire when we are there.

You can find a map of our place at the market in this blog posting.

We can't go to the post office in market days, so there may be some delay in shipping during summer market season. When I see your order, I always let you know when your order will be shipped.

We don't sell wholesale, but there is now a 10% discount for orders over value of 250€.
