WHAT IS RIIHIVILLA

Riihivilla is a small business, which sells naturally dyed Finnsheep wool, belonging to my husband Jouni Riihelä and me, Leena Riihelä.

The first seeds of Riihivilla were sown in 1980s when I started dyeing with natural dyes. Soon I became interested in using mushrooms for dyeing and in 1990 we bought our first own sheep. It was self-evident to us that they were Finnsheep because of their good wool. We farmed organically and our sheep had also organic status. Riihivilla was officially founded in 1995, and then we started to sell our products in the Market Place Kauppatori in Helsinki.
In the beginning of the 2000s we got a permanent selling place there and at that point we gave up our own sheep; there wasn't enough time to do everyting by ourselves and we concentrated to dyeing and selling the yarn.

Now we buy the good Finnsheep wool from our friends near-by. We sort out the wool ourselves, and then get it spun into yarn in Pirtin Kehräämö, where they make the yarn to our requirements from that wool. Most of the sheep where our wool comes from are grown organically and besides that the wool of Finnsheep is good, we want to help farmers who still grow Finnsheep.
